Build a three-level clue ladder

Write a practice word on paper and create three clues: direct, contextual, and personal. For library, books is direct, quiet afternoon is contextual, and where I finished my project is personal. The personal clue needs a connection you can explain; otherwise it adds noise rather than mystery. Try the exercise with a second word such as bicycle. Discuss which clue would leave useful room for questions, remembering that shared experiences differ between players.

Avoid shortcuts that replace discussion

Agree whether rhymes, translations, first letters, and pieces of the word are allowed. A translation can reveal the entire answer to one bilingual player while leaving everyone else confused. Do not introduce a new restriction midway through someone’s turn. If a clue accidentally exposes the word, finish or restart by mutual agreement rather than blaming its speaker. These are optional group conventions, not claims about automatic filters or enforcement inside the app.

Explain connections, not private history

When questioned, add a small explanation that preserves some uncertainty. For quiet afternoon, you might say that you associate the place with concentrating. You need not disclose a personal story just because your clue used one. If you are the imposter, work with the provided hint and the conversation, but avoid repeating the previous player word for word. Afterward, compare how clues functioned from each role. A surprising clue is not proof of deception; sometimes it simply reflects a different association or interpretation.

Take it with you

  • Practice direct, contextual, and personal clues.
  • Set language and wordplay rules in advance.
  • Treat unusual associations as questions, not proof.
